What is a metadata cleaner?
A metadata cleaner — sometimes called a metadata remover, EXIF stripper or meta cleaner — is a tool that deletes the invisible records stored inside an image file. The pixels you see are only part of the story. Alongside them, cameras, phones and editing software write structured data: the device make and model, the exact time the shutter fired, editing software versions, and often precise GPS coordinates.
AI-generated images add a second layer. Files exported from Stable Diffusion, DALL‑E, MidJourney or Adobe Firefly can embed AI metadata: the full text prompt, the seed, the sampler, model hashes, and C2PA content credentials that formally certify how the file was produced. An AI metadata cleaner removes both layers — the classic photo metadata and the AI provenance records — in one pass.
Why do people reach for a free metadata cleaner? Two reasons come up again and again:

What is a metadata cleaner?
A metadata cleaner (also called a metadata remover or EXIF stripper) deletes the hidden records stored inside image files — camera details, GPS coordinates, timestamps, editing history and, for AI-generated images, prompts and provenance credentials. MetadataRemover is a free metadata cleaner that runs entirely in your browser: your images are never uploaded, and no account is needed.
What is the image fingerprint, and why reset it?
The image fingerprint is the unique identity a file gets from its exact pixel values — platforms and investigators can hash those pixels and match copies of the same image across the web, even after metadata is deleted. MetadataRemover applies a microscopic ±1–2 RGB perturbation to a random fraction of pixels. It's invisible to the eye, but the file's hash changes completely, so the cleaned copy can no longer be matched to earlier versions.
Is MetadataRemover really free? What's the catch?
Yes — the full feature set is free: batch processing, all formats, every removal type. Everything runs on your device, so there are no server costs to recoup and no data to monetize — that's what keeps it free.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Files are read by your own browser via the HTML5 File API, processed on a local canvas, and saved straight back to your device. You can verify this yourself: open your browser's network inspector, or even disconnect from the internet — the cleaner keeps working.
Which AI generators' metadata can it remove?
Any generator that stores data in the file's metadata segments: Stable Diffusion (Automatic1111, ComfyUI, Forge — including PNG parameters chunks), DALL‑E, MidJourney, Adobe Firefly, and tools that embed C2PA content credentials such as Photoshop's Generative Fill. The scanner shows you exactly what it found before cleaning.
Will cleaning reduce my image quality?
No visible loss. Choosing "keep original" for PNG gives you a mathematically lossless re-encode (plus the invisible fingerprint shift). JPEG and WebP outputs use high-quality compression (92% by default — adjustable), which is visually indistinguishable from the source for normal use.
Can a metadata cleaner remove invisible watermarks?
No — and you should be skeptical of any tool that claims otherwise. Invisible watermarks such as Google's SynthID are woven into the pixels themselves, not stored as metadata. A metadata cleaner removes the file's embedded records and resets the pixel fingerprint, but it can't extract watermark patterns or guarantee how any third-party AI detector will classify a processed image.
What formats and limits apply?
JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF up to 25 MB each, up to 20 images per batch. Animated formats like GIF aren't supported because re-encoding would flatten the animation.
